Bold? Maybe. Dumb? Quite Possibly. Totally Offsides Staff and Listeners Make Some 2021-22 NHL Season Predictions

Who doesn’t love to make a bold prediction? I think as a member of this crew, if you don’t have a hot take, GTFO. We got some of the crew together to make their picks ahead of the season, and why not, invited listeners to make some guesses too.

We’ll also come back and reference this as things happen this season.

Stanley Cup Winner:
Chip:
Tampa Bay Lightning “Every year you guys call me crazy for getting behind Perry and #TeamChaos, this is the year is finally all comes to pass. I don’t love it, but the record speaks for itself. Also bold prediction, if they do, Perry retires after this season.”
Anthony: Vegas Golden Knights “They still have a great roster and they’ve come so close so often. They should dominate the Pacific Division and hopefully they don’t run into another hot goalie in these playoffs.”
Jeff: Colorado Avalanche
Nick:
Colorado Avalanche
Khalid:
Tampa Bay Lightning

Listener Breakdown:
Colorado Avalanche (6 votes)
Vegas Golden Knights (2 votes)
Arizona Coyotes (1 vote)
Tampa Bay Lightning (1 vote)
Florida Panthers (1 vote)
Philadelphia Flyers (1 vote)
New York Islanders (1 vote)

Worst Team this season:
Chip:
Arizona Coyotes
Anthony:
Arizona Coyotes “They lost Dvorak who I loved, they lost Garland. They got rid of OEL which is good long-term but he’s still good right now. They are in a brutal division. They will be a bag of suck.”
Jeff:
Ottawa Senators
Nick:
Anaheim Ducks
Khalid:
Anaheim Ducks

Listener Breakdown:
Buffalo Sabres (5 votes)
Anaheim Ducks (3 votes)
Arizona Coyotes (2 votes)
Detroit Red Wings (1 vote)
New York Rangers (1 vote)
Ottawa Senators (1 vote)

Surprising Playoff team this season:
Chip: Los Angeles Kings
Anthony:
Los Angeles Kings “I was torn between the Kings and Senators. I love both teams, but the Senators move from the North Division back to the Atlantic making their season harder to predict. The Kings play in the weakest division but will probably have to finish in the top three, since the Central is so deep and will probably snag the wild card spots. I think the Kings are more likely to sneak in.”
Jeff:
Los Angeles Kings
Nick:
Minnesota Wild
Khalid:
Seattle Kraken

Listener Breakdown:
New Jersey Devils (3 votes)
Los Angeles Kings (3 votes)
Columbus Blue Jackets (1 vote)
New York Rangers (1 vote)

San Jose Sharks (1 vote)
Chicago Blackhawks (1 vote)

Surprising Disappointing Team:
Chip: Canadiens “You lost Perry, and as history shows, that means good night Habs”
Anthony:
Canadiens “Part of this is me hoping they are disappointing. Losing Shea Weber to injury will hurt and losing Kotkaniemi isn’t great. Tatar is gone, they are in a tougher division again as well. It’s hard to know if Suzuki and Caulfield will make up for losing the other guys. They looked good in the playoffs. We will see. My other choice is Minnesota.”
Jeff:
Tampa Bay Lightning
Nick:
Boston Bruins
Khalid:
Boston Bruins

Listener Breakdown:
Washington Capitals (3 votes)
Edmonton Oilers (3 votes)
Montreal Canadiens (3 votes)

First Coach to get Fired:
Chip: Peter DeBoer, “and like everyone else that has been moved from VGK, will find out via Twitter”
Anthony: Travis Green, Vancouver Canucks “He’s made the playoffs once in four seasons as head coach. They missed the playoffs by nine points after their promising upset of the Blues and taking the Golden Knights to seven games in 2020. They are in a Canadian market with a new rival on the block that will hog a lot of attention. I think of the Canucks get off to a slow start, especially in the Pacific, Green will be fired. I would say Eakins is right behind him, but I don’t think the Samuelis remember they own a hockey team soooooo….”
Nick: Dave Tippett, Edmonton Oilers
Khalid: Dallas Eakins, Anaheim Ducks

Listener Breakdown:
Jeff Blashill, Detroit Red Wings (2 votes)
Dave Tippett, Edmonton Oilers (2 votes)

Sheldon Keefe, Toronto Maple Leafs (1 vote)
Travis Green, Vancouver Canucks (1 vote)

Number of Coaches to get Fired:
Chip: Three
Anthony:
Four “Just throwing a number out there, this one is hard to figure out. Hynes (Predators), Colliton (Blackhawks), Green (Canucks), Eakins (Ducks), Boughner (Sharks), Tippet (Oilers), Keefe (Maple Leafs). All these guys have some level of pressure on them either from length of tenure and lack of success or coaching in high-pressure markets. I’m assuming some of these guys will survive the season and other surprised will occur so let’s go with four.”
Jeff:
Six
Nick:
Two

First GM to get Fired:
Chip: Kevyn Adams, Buffalo Sabres “You can’t fumble a situation with a franchise player THIS badly and survive, right? RIGHT?”
Anthony:
If the Samuelis remember they own a team. Bob Murray, if not, Jim Benning (Vancouver Canucks).”The same thing applies to Benning as applied to Green. He’s had a longer tenure with time to realize his vision and he hasn’t. After taking on OEL and his huge contract along with adding Connor Garland, that is a big splash. If it fails, he’s in trouble. Bob Murray is my second choice, I mean he should be first because he should’ve been gone last season, but like I said, the Samuelis don’t seem to notice that their team is terrible so Bob will probably retire before he’s fired.”
Nick:
Marc Bergevin

It’s unfair to put him on this list, but he’s had a tragedy in his personal life with the loss of his first child. I wouldn’t blame him at all for a disappointing performance this season.”
Jeff: The Kraken, “they will be bad, and worse than comically bad. Like feel sorry for them bad. It won’t be pretty”
